"It's kind of like a crazy contest between an orange and a spaceship and a potted plant and a spoon"

So the one I'd settled on did win The Mercury, in the end. Hurray for Anthony And The Johnsons. Beautiful, singularly haunting, music.

And while we're here, let's bash off the PL Alternative Prize. After much deliberation, I finally settled on Soulwax. They're witty in so many ways, even if a bit on the smug self-regarding side. The obligatory perspex trophy thingy is winging its way themwards...unless any persons here present have due cause to object...

Anthony and the Johnsons is the living proof that no music is too insipid to be successful. So there's hope for all of us...

Also, I can't help but feel that the judges may have been siding with the bloke because of what he looks like as well as he what he sounds like, in some kind of anti-Girls-Aloud-type-thing stand.

They chose summit that sounds so different, it would've been a crime to pass it by for another bunch of indie kids - however good they might be (actually Maximo Park were probably my second favourites to win). But don't you think his haircut, at the awards ceremony, was so Girls Aloud/Atomic Kitten?

Bolleucks a ca. But I do like that you can just loop the mp3 snippet of 'Hope There's Someone' from his website without even the discerning listener, like me, actually noticing that it cuts off and goes back to the start of the song, so changeless is the sound. I can't help feel there's something a little Aqualung about all this

No and no - you're probably not listening if you're out to compare the music with that bland formless stuff (didn't you get the Aqualung album?) Hope there's someone starts off fragile, and builds to a creshendo - Strange and Beautiful just plods along and reminds one of cars. Don't make me tell you again ;P

The important thing is that I need to get a picture of you winking and sticking your tongue out simultaneously.

The wonders of t' internet mean that I can pretend to be really expressive, when actually pretty vague in real life. It's so useful.

Well I've stayed up especially late to say that I'm with Laurence on this one.

In fact, I am, quite literally, a bird now.
