high contrast

figure 67.1. artist's impression of an editor's mind

While we're on the sheer slopes of inane rhetoric, my attention was helpfully drawn to yesterday’s headline by the ever moderate Daily Express. Apparently BOMBERS ARE ALL SPONGEING ASYLUM SEEKERS. Yet again they've excelled themselves, on the road to self-parody. The Guardian diary's already done a good job of poking it, and on one level it's hilarious. But I've written to the PCC for the first time, anyway, for what it’s worth.

Thankfully, there are some who can communicate with great pathos. I recommend you read this poem by Yevgeny Yevtushenko.

I saw the headline.
Amazing stuff.
I liked the Guardian diary, but it got tiresome when they fell back to 'Blais a liar, pants on fire, nyer nyer nyer' immature swipe at, to be honest, our best PM since....I dunno, decades ago.
Not that that excuses lying, except, I still don't think he did, knowingly.
Sorry, thats not the subject of the day!

Chris -

It's often very childish, true. But I like that, most days it's just the kind of knowingly foolish humour I need as an antidote to the, often annoying, news. Kind of like a potted Have I Got News For You.

The current prime minister is way better than most that have been around for years. And so much attack on him, especially by the left, is ridiculous and fascile. I have so many issues with him, no matter that he's better than most. Perhaps we'll never be fully satisfied.

It's very hard to measure his actual credibility and I'm beggining to wonder if - like the neo cons of the USA - his self image really does manage to keep him free of descipt. Choose the right words, and you can believe you never lied - never even countenance the possibility that you do.

Robert -

I find it hard to remember when the Express was a relatively harmless, if naff, paper. They've certainly gone down an exciting road, who knows where it may next lead...TONY BLAIR IS A PAEDO perhaps?

Didn't they also have a headline along the lines "ONE DEAD, THREE TO GO" a few days ago, or did I dream I saw that in Tescos?

It could so easily be a dream, but nay - it sounds ever so likely to be them. I know headlines are meant to catch attention and be punchy, but it's just ridiculous - they might as well be writing placards, for all the scruples they show.

Yes, ludicrous, isn't it?

But what I really want to know is: why have we been cordened off into groups in your links on the side? Are James, Kari, Sarah, Ken and Andy more worthy than me? :-p
